Bridge Demolition

BR03 M1 Northbound Bridge

M1 Existing Northbound Bridge (Over Springwood Road) (BR03)

Full demolition of bridge during nightworks including asbestos removal (formwork used between the girders and bridge deck), removal of bridge, piers and abutments. The bridge girders, weighing up to 28 tonnes, were cut and craned out using a 450 tonne crane. Girders were transported to an offsite processing yard, and broken up and recycled during the day shift. The remainder of the bridge components are demolished with excavators.

The demolition of these highway bridges represent demolition excellence. No effort is spared in the planning, paperwork, safety, and project delivery. Abyss has a successful record of bridge demolition, including multiple over-road bridges for Tier 1 Builders.

Key aspects

  • Demolition across 4 sites, including 3 Highway Bridges, and an On and Off Ramp bridge.
  • Night and Day Shifts – Night shift for demolition works, Dayshift for material processing and recycling
  • 450 tonne cranes to lift 28 tonne girders, directly on to float trucks for transportation
  • Large scale engineering involvement

BR07 On and Off Ramps

M1 Existing Southbound On and Off Ramp (Over Fitzgerald Ave) (BR07 offramp)

These On and Off Ramp bridges were demolished using cranes, and mechanical excavator means. Cranes of 250 tonnes size were used, and the works were completed in line with the tight program.

BR08 M1 Northbound Bridge

M1 Existing Northbound Bridge (Over Fitzgerald Ave) (BR08)

This bridge was demolished by mechanical means, utilising excavators. Excavators worked on the bridge itself to demolish any non-structural elements, and then worked from the headstocks or the road below, to demolish the structure. Works were also conducted during nightworks, with the majority of the concrete processing taking place off site, during the day shift.

Br10 M1 Southbound Bridge

M1 Existing Southbound Bridge (Over Fitzgerald Ave) (BR10)

Similar to BR08, this bridge was demolished mechanically by excavators during the nightshift, with material processing during the dayshift.
