Jewel Project - Excavator being lifted by crane for high rise building demolition

Demolition of Oriana, Paradise Sands and Silvrette buildings

Abyss Demolition performed the mechanical demolition of high rise beachfront buildings in Surfers Paradise, which made way for the iconic ‘Jewel Residences’ The Langham project. The demolition included the Oriana building, reaching 15 levels and 44m above ground, and a 3 and a 2-story accommodation/apartment building, plus some houses.

Check out our timelapse video below.

The project involved a complete strip out of the building to leave a concrete shell, extensive backpropping to all levels, scaffolding around the entire building, gantry to maintain footpath access, and craning excavators on to the top level to demolish the building level-by-level, withconcrete rubble pushed into and down the liftshafts, for removal and recycling from the ground level.

The skilled excavator operators used steel ramps to get down to the next level, as the building was demolished from top to bottom, level-by-level.

Key aspects

  • Major internal strip out to leave a concrete shell, ready for mechanical demolition
  • Collaboration with structural engineers for extensive backpropping to each level’s suspended slab, to hold the weight of excavators on the roof
  • Full height containment scaffold, including a gantry to maintain pedestrian path access
  • Demolition from top to bottom, with the excavators being craned on to the roof
