This project involved the demolition of the existing phosphoric acid double cell cooling towers located within the IPL Phosphate Hill facility. Abyss Demolition were engaged to safely deconstruct and remove the structures with precision and care, ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding plant operations. Comprehensive environmental and safety controls were implemented to manage dust, sediment, and waste recycling. The works were completed under strict compliance with ISO-certified safety and environmental management systems.

Site Works

  • Sequential top-down mechanical demolition of both cooling tower cells using specialised excavators.
  • Careful dismantling of crossover platforms with crane assistance to prevent structural damage.
  • Waste separation and recycling of steel, aluminium, and concrete materials.
  • Final site cleaning, inspection, and walkthrough with IPL representatives prior to demobilisation.

Project Complexity & Execution

  • The demolition was completed within a live operational environment, requiring coordination to minimise impact on ongoing site operations.
  • Precision demolition was carried out near existing infrastructure that needed to remain undamaged, showcasing Abyss’s control and technical expertise.
  • Use of specialised high-reach machinery and hydraulic shears ensured safe and efficient dismantling of large industrial structures.
  • Dual-tower sequencing allowed one cooling tower to be demolished while the other was prepared, optimising schedule and site logistics.
